"Ronan's Escape"

Here is another short film which has done its run on the festival circuit and is now in public release. I have no connection with this project at all except that I have now watched the movie and know one or two of the crew. It was shot on motion picture film, not video but we are broad minded here, aren't we?? Guys?? Well telecine or scanning is digital imaging?? Never mind. It is worth a look anyway.

It is not exclusively Western Australian. The very worthy underscore is by a US citizen Hamilton Cleverden.

The director A.J.Carter spends time in the US as well as in Western Australia where "Ronan's Escape" was filmed. The film's DoP, David Lemay has experience internationally and in Western Australia which is now his home.

It was to have been originally shot entirely on 35mm film. I understand there was a technical issue with the 35mm film camera and that the available replacement during a critical timeframe, had to be a 16mm film camera. I understand the same stock was chosen for consistency.

This may be explained more accurately in the behind-the-scenes which is apparently on the DVD which is for sale. My info is definitely more than second generation hearsay so should not be regarded valid.

According to A.J's written introduction on the site, the movie has not been without controversy as it embraces two touchy subjects. I won't elaborate as this will spoil the viewing experience. Have a look and listen to the trailer. Therein you will hear an even more heartful rendition of Hamilton Cleverden's musical work.

Anyway. Enough prattle. Here is the link to the website and the full movie.

Great story. Thanks for sharing!

Didn't like the "crushed blacks video-ish" grade though.

I do not know if the grade as viewed on the internet was a creative choice, or a necessity, or a product of transcoding for the web. We have hard light in some locations over here in Western Australia.

When compressing a filmed image for downloads, something has to give and I guess it is the subtle darker tones being crushed into black.

I have no connection with the project other than knowing a few of the crew and having met the DoP.
