An adult film. No, not that kind.
 

Maybe adult is the wrong word, but "sophisticated" sounds snobby, and it's not what I would call an "art house" movie, but I found "The Constant Gardner" to be the most interesting film I have seen in a long while, although I didn't completely follow the plot. This is what reviewers call "bravura filmmaking" from the director of "City of God," which this current film shows was no fluke. This guy knows how to make films. Won't spin everyone's wheels, but for some of you it will be exhilarating. Ralph Finnes is one great actor.

Oh, and did I mention it's a love story?

I saw it too and I am a fan of Mereilles work from "City of God". I liked the concept more than the execution. Even though copious time was spent getting into the head of the character, he never connected with me, nor his wife. I'm glad other people aren't having this problem because the fictional subject it is exploring is actually quite real. I suppose I just am not a fan of passive characters and the actual mystery of it isn't really a mystery unless one is totally ignorant of third world news. The more human part of the story - how the husband reconnects with what he loved about his wife and uncovers her own personal world - I thought was delicately handled. So that part was successful. Overall, I think this was done better in "Missing". That is, the story of a westerner who through divining the past of a loved one, discovers a hidden story in a country.

i gotta see this cause my class is REQUIRING it. apparently the author of the book writes political elements well enough my professor requires us to watch it... even though i personally don't have desire to watch it =). will report back once i see it.
