Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D
 

Just saw this over the weekend and man, has this technology come along way. By far the best 3-D effect I've ever seen, although it was more pronounced on the shorts that preceded the movie. I'm curious as to what others think about this technology? Cool as it is, it does't really add anything to the story. I also thought the image didn't look as good as it did when I saw it originally. Colors weren't as vibrant, and the image seemed a little soft.

How was the experience?
I actually like the fact that film can move you to tears or laughter or fright with just sound/music and a 2d image.
But how is the moviegoing experience? You said the image didn't seemed that good? So was there a good reason to see it in 3D, exept for the fun factor?

I really ask myself how a big epic like LOTR or Titanic would look in 3d.
I'm curious, but I also would like to still have a line between films and video games - although I realise that's maybe a fast assumption...

I don't want to put the technology down. The effect is exponentially better than in any other 3-D movie I've seen. You owe to yourself to check it out while you still have the chance. I wouldn't want to always watch it like that though.

Does anyone have any idea how they actually achieve that effect? I've always wondered. I have a few ideas, but none of them seem practical.

This was in theaters 2 days before I left the country (back home to Holland)
and I totally forgot about it. I was quite bummed. Would've loved to see that
movie in 3D, especially with a digital projection. Oh well.....

As I understand it, they use the original stop motion film for one eye and reconstructed a slightly different perspective with cgi for the other eye. I suppose it would be interesting to see it, but I can't help feeling Disney is scraping the barrel. I think they even made a Cinderella 4 or something.

Rumor has it that Nightmare in 3D was an experiment for ILM to see if they could make convincing 3D images from a 2D source. If the movie is a success then George Lucas is going to make Star Wars episodes 1-6 in 3D and release them one after another in the “correct” order like he did in 97 when he added digital visual effects to the original trilogy. I have already seen parts of Star Wars in 3D that ILM did as tests so I have no doubt that GL will take it to the next level and make all 6 movies that way. But idk if I’m excited or disappointed at this idea yet.
