Canon C100 $10 Zacuto Eyecup for Viewfinder

3 Attachment(s)
Recently bought the Canon C100 and so far loving it. Using the viewfinder, I found that I could use it no problem. The problem was the light leak around my eye that made it difficult. Having a Zacuto Z-finder nearby I pulled off the eyecup. It fit the C100 perfectly and eliminated the light leak. Looking it up at B&H, I found it for $10.80! A quick fix for those looking to improve the viewfinder.

Will try this tonight. I have an original Zfinder for my 7d and somewhere in my years with it, I needed to replace the rubber cup to accommodate the small cover that Zacuto engineered to protect the LCD screens from the sun. I have an extra rubber eyepiece somewhere that I may try to repurpose for this.

Excellent info Jeff.
I have been building my C100/ Ninja2 kit today and was just getting to VF cups. (ergonometrics R US these days)

I have an eyecup off my cheap Perfect 3.0X LCD loupe which works but doesn't appear to cover as well as yours.- (Amazing price from Zacuto! Now if they would only sell the C100 handle relocator for $50.)

Also found this most useful VF info from Scot Mcdonald: Canon C100: Viewfinder Workarounds - The Location Crew

anyone know a good source for the chamois eye cup covers?... I have an ancient one that is long past its discard date.

Re: Canon C100 $10 Zacuto Eyecup for Viewfinder

I tried my Zacuto Eyecup on the viewfinder and it was pretty good, but it kept falling off, and didn't have as much cushioning and support when pressed firmly against the eye.

I bought this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/837359-REG/Blue_Star_20102_Extra_Small_Round_Eye.html

I read about it on a forum from the person who gave it's one review on B&H. It fits on pretty snugly without any need for modification, and is really comfortable on the eye, considerably more than the Zacuto Eyecup. Another plus is it doesn't get in the way of opening and closing the LCD screen as much as the Zacuto one did.

I've tried the Bluestar cushion extra small round. It works well, the zacuto covers my eye a little better. Great stuff about getting the viewfinder in check.

Also checked out The Location Crew. Looking up a PD170 eyecup, they want $65.

Canon C100 $14 Zacuto Eyecup for Viewfinder

Looks like they discontinued the $10 version of the eyecup. Here's an updated version that costs $14.25. Still using mine. Helps in really bright outdoor shoots.

Here goes.

Hope it's not too underwhelming now... :-)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Just taking advantage of a bit of vacation time over here in the UK and thought I'd post some pics of a modified Bluestar Oval Long Eyecushion (Bluestar Oval Long Eyecushion) that I cobbled together a few days back.

The dealer from which I bought the cam, Proactive, are talking with Canon UK about an official solution and I'll update if they come up with anything. But, in the meantime, with a pair of scissors, some superglue and a spare 5 minutes, the Bluestar fitted the C100 pretty darn perfectly.

1) Cut the elongated end:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/attachme...1&d=1370287007

2) Fold over and glue.

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/attachme...1&d=1370287007

3) Cut the other end and do the same:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/attachme...1&d=1370287007

4) The chamois should now sit proud like so:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/attachme...1&d=1370287007

5) Bob's your uncle:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/attachme...1&d=1370287007

You could add a thread stitch at each junction for longevity, but the glue seems to hold well on this foam material.

There's absolutely no light leak now - just a big distracting red blob on the back of the camera, but Bluestar do them in "natural" and grey finish too.

Now... back to my vacation...

Ben.

Thanks for this thread, it's been so helpful. I used the Zacuto eyecup for a while and really liked it, but wanted some more padding. Turns out the Bluestar eyecup and Zacuto combo makes for an awesome eyecup!

I cut up some velcro to attach them to each other, so the bluestar wouldn't fall off, but some sort of glue would probably work better.
