Have we decided if slow motion possible with C100?

Hello all,

Apologies as I know this has been discussed on and off in various threads, but I haven't found a conclusive answer. Have C100 operators determined if it is possible to get slow motion from shooting in 60i? If so, how good is it and what is the basic workflow?

Any test shots are more than welcome :)

Many thanks!
~Omar

Sorry for my bad Englisch ;)...
Maybe this can help you a Little..

Thanks Franz! This definitely helps. Looks like it is possible then.

basically, expect 60i to 24p to lose a chunk of resolution, maybe notching it down to the 720 area

Yeah thats sort of how I saw it. So its essentially 720p60 (but maybe a hair better in resolution).

My question would then be, in terms of sharpness and image quality, how well would the 720p like resolution of the C100 slow motion stand up against 1080p slow motion on a Panasonic GH3?

I've thought of renting the GH3 if I needed slow motion but if the C100 is as good than there wouldn't be a need to.

This is interesting. So what exactly is the process of obtaining slomo in FCPx if i shoot at 50i (Pal land)?

Thanks

Drew.

I would assume (being from the land of NTSC myself) that you would need to have a 25p timeline first of all, shoot 50i, deinterlace, and then conform that to 25p for 1/2 speed.

That video Franz posted looks pretty good. I have yet to really try it myself (I've done some 60i for slo-mo shooting, but I'm not doing post on it so I don't know how it turned out).

Here is the blog post on how Franz did it. Pretty interesting!

Thanks for the link, Erik! Very helpful. Apparently the Atomos Samurai Blade will record 1080p60...be nice if it had a powerful deinterlacer in it to do this automagically, but I highly doubt it will.

Franz's post sort of poked me into checking this out - was there a simpler method? Can we go further?

So, 50i at 1/100th to 1/150th of a second, and don't think about using Optical Flow to double it again - just got to try it out with Twixtor.

Thanks Matt for taking the time with these demo's, very helpful info!

No problem Gary. The Blade looks sooooo good but why didn't they add a HDMI input. The screen is so nice. Saw it at NAB. So darn close.

I would guess it might make the unit physically larger perhaps? I don't know, but I'm strongly considering selling the Ninja and getting one and just using the Connect (which I have) to do the conversion. Only problem is that it's now a second point of failure for the connection, and involves more cables.

Hey everyone, slow motion is very easy with the C100 if you have After Effects!!

I found the following posted by Steven White back in 2006 in response to somebody who wanted to do the exact same thing with 60i footage from a different camera.

"Hiya Shannon,

If it's actual 60p video you're looking for, to keep that "reality" look and make 60p 1280x720p or SD 60p, the procedure is trivial in After Effects.

- make a 1440x1080 (PA 1.33) composition with a framerate of 59.94
- select your 1080i clip and check that the interpretations rules are "Upper Field First" with "Preserve Edges" checked.
- plop clip in composition... and voila! Every field becomes a frame.

Now when you render the footage you have to render it to a 60p file.

Alternatively, if you want to do slow motion (at say, 23.976 fps):
- change the composition frame rate to 23.976
- use the same interpretation rules as above
- plop clip in composition
- with the clip layer selected, click on the "Layer" drop down menu and select "Time Stretch"
- insert a value of 250% and tada! Beautiful slow motion.

-Steve"

I tried it out and it works great. Very easy too! If you have Twixtor, I'm sure you could slow it down even more. I did not see too much of a drop in resolution, but perhaps only a little bit. Still need to do more tests tomorrow, but this is a promising start!
