C100 Data Needs Recovery Message
 

Yesterday while shooting a wedding, I received a "Data Needs Recovery" message when I turned the camera on. I had never seen this message before and was alarmed about taking any action (proceed or cancel) because I needed to continue shooting immediately so I turned the camera off, replaced with another card and continued shooting. Reading the manual I now see that I may have caused this problem by turning the camera off while still recording (possible). My issue now is that I've re-inserted the card into the camera today but don't get the recovery option. It appears as a blank card ready to record. Is there any way to recover what is on the card?

I note nobody else has responded yet, all probably thinking 'oh crumbs - I hope this never happens to me'.

I haven't seen this on my C100, but I have seen it on my Sony EX1 when I happened to be shooting where I shouldn't be and had to pack up and leave darned quick. Sony's expensive SxS cards have a special function in their cards that explicitly protects your rushes against this scenario. I was shooting on SDHC in SxS-style adaptors. Upon 'switch-on' with that shot unfinished, I *was* given the option to 'Restore Media' which happened successfully.

However, AVCHD 'must' look like a BluRay disk layout - that's the whole mystique behind AVCHD. There aren't the safeguards and processes hanging around the format to automagically mend 'unclosed recording sessions'.

IIRC, Panasonic released a utility that could help in these circumstances (very sorry, I thought I had the direct URL to the utility):

If not, the usual culprits need to line up: if you have an MTS file, try 5DtoRGB or ClipWrap - they're both pretty forgiving in whatever MTS file you chuck at it.

Very scary, Art. I don't have a concrete answer for you except that I BELIEVE I mistakenly turned mine off at one point while recording and, if I took notice correctly, the camera stopped the recording before turning itself off. (It's one of those things that happened so quickly, I just kind of said to myself "oh, good, the camera is smart enough to stop recording in a proper way before shutting down."

But that is pure anecdotal and just a blurry memory from a frenzied moment at a wedding... You'd think, though, that these cameras would/should have a feature to delay the power-off until recording is stopped properly.

It happened to me something as,shooting a wedding with C100,the battery which was not canon :-),looks pretty much..battery is discharged suddenly.I changed the battery and restarted the camera,the message of recovery and gave ok,recovered last clip.I shoot in dual slot,after this problem,C100 film on a single card,not dual

As it turns out, it does not appear that I lost any data- whew. But I am curious about the fact that I turned the camera off while the message was displayed without answering (yes or no to the recovery question) and it did not re-prompt me again when I powered up the camera with the card inserted later on. Or, I may have the sequence of events mixed up in my head due to the "frenzy" of the moment. Interestingly I made the same mental blunder that day with my Zoom H4n. I was recording a private audio message from the bride's father and I turned off the Zoom before I hit stop. The file was lost but I at least realized what I did on the spot and got him to do a re-do.
