Alan Roberts gives thumbs up for the C300 MK II

Good article on Alan Robert's testing of the C300 MK II:

Alan Roberts tests the Canon C300 MkII – finds 15 stops of dynamic range and says it meets EBU tier 1 standard for HD and tier 2 for 4K

Thanks for the info, Jim.

Quoting from the end of the report: "Therefore the camera can qualify for Tier 1 in HD but only for Tier 2 in UHD."

Does anyone know what this means in practice? When most/all programmes start going out in UHD, what are the restrictions for not meeting Tier 2 standards in UHD? Will the C300 mk2 still be okay to shoot the whole programme? I've read through the EBU requirements but can't seem to find an answer.

Tier 1 for UHD is pretty intense. Even the F65 is only 3/4ths of the way there. It requires a sensor large enough to deliver 444 in UHD, which, if I remember correctly, is like 36MP.

So even the Red Epic won't get Tier 1 approval in Euroland. Sounds like a load of bo**ocks to me. Obviously we need minimum standards but so many cameras hold up well through the chain that I can't help thinking the technocrats (professional pixel peepers/measurebators) are listened to a little too carefully. But maybe I'm developing a rebel streak.

On the bright side, the cameras do hold up well so maybe the people who commission programmes wil see that for most doc stuff the C300 mk2, and others in that quality range, will be totally acceptable for UHD broadcast.

From Alan Roberts:

The RED Epic Dragon camera is well suited for programme-acquisition for EBU R.118 Tier 2 UHD provided the 6k shooting mode is used. 5k mode is probably also acceptable for Tier 2. The image-content resolution at 6k is almost good enough for Tier 1, but cannot fully achieve that status with this sensor
I think Red Weapon will be Tier 1 for UHD when shooting in 8K, even though it's only 19MP, but we'll see once it gets out into the wild.
