C100 mark 1 and Canon 10-18mm STM
 

Hi all,

I have a C100 mark 1 with no DPAF that I've had for several years. Here recently I've been thinking about getting the DPAF upgrade, last week I decided to to purchase a a 10-18mm STM lens. To my surprise I'm able to use the continuous AF feature. While at BestBuy i also tried the 24mm F2.8 STM and it doesn't allow the CAF. My thought are to use the 10-18 with my Ronin M instead of my Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 or Canon 24-105mm F4. The camera balance with this lens as well as I can use my Nyrius ARIES Prime Wireless Video HDMI Transmitter & Receiver for monitoring what I shoot and the rig is not as heavy. Has anyone else used the 10-18mm STM with a C series and if so what are your thought with this lens?

I've used it on several projects. My impressions, it's a great lens for very little money. It's slow so only use it on exteriors or well lit interiors, lousy low light lens, regardless of what people like to do, I don't like to run my C100 over ISO 1600 or really 1200. Sure the image is usable at ISO 6400 but grain is crappy looking and denoising is a PITA. Lens is somewhat fragile as it's cheap but if you need something wide for a gimbal, it's super light weight, which helps, it's cheap and its relatively sharp. What's not to like? Lot of bang for the buck. The Tokina is built better but weighs a lot more and costs a lot more.

Dan, I agree with you on everything you've said. I went out late yesterday evening and late this evening and it performed pretty good for the price. Once the sun went down I was unable to shoot with it. I think that I am going token it and use it for gimbal and slide shots. I also think that I will send my camera in and get the DPAF upgrade

DPAF is a must! I shoot BTS on TV sets and on films all over the world and it can be very challenging to judge focus in bright daylight especially, even with my Ninja Blade screen. I really rely on DPAF a lot in my work and it's pretty good, I rarely miss focus these days whereas when shooting with DSLRs like the 5D MKIII, I used to miss focus quite often. What looks sharp on a 5" screen isn't always sharp on a 27" screen.
