C100 or C100 mark II

Hi Guys,

At this time in the market. Is it best to get a used C100 DAF or C100 MII used. will be using it for church event. So far I have canon lenses like the EFS 10-18, 18-135, 24-105 F4, 70-200 F4, 17-55 F2.8. Let me know what you guys recommend to get know.

If you have the money go for the Mark ii... But the basic cameras are virtually the same.. except the Mark ii addresses several of the issues (mistakes) in the original design.. the main two being: a better screen, that rotates properly and a better, usable viewfinder. (The one on the Mark i is a joke)

The image quality of the mark ii is arguably slightly improved too.

But the Mark i with the DPAF is a great little camera. I added a third party EVF, Smallrig top plate, and mic shock mount.. as well as a compact shoulder rig, and I can't really say that the mark ii upgrades would have made much difference to the rig.

If you output to an Atomos the quality of both is pretty nice. I regularly cut mine with footage shot on a 5D3 in ML raw and image quality is about on a par.

cheers
Gareth

If you never need to have the LCD screen rotate or use the EVF (mostly for outside shooting) or need 60p slow motion, then the C100 Mark I with the DPAF upgrade is probably the best deal.

I like the swivel screen for the C100MII. What should be a fair price for the Mark II and also hours on it. I have used a C100 Mark 1 before and did not like the swivel screen.

Well not sure of the US market.. but I paid 2000€ (around 2200 $) for a C100 Mark I with DPAF in mint condition, last autumn. C100 Mark 2's were going for about a grand more second hand.

As a C100 MKI owner, I feel the MKI is a better value, I have seen nice DPAF ones going as cheap as $1,800.00 while good used C100 MKIIs are still fetching around $2,900.00 to $3,200.00 from what I have seen.

C100 MKII is a bit better, the screen, EVF and 60p as well as DPAF are better but the C100 MKI is a better deal because the end result is about the same, you are mostly paying for operator convenience. I would buy the C100 MKI and spend the difference on some good glass. Glass always wins over video features. My two favorite lenses on my C100 are the Canon EOS 17-55mm 2.8 IS and the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II. Great glass, they really do everything I want or need except servo control.

This indeed was my reasoning... as I already had lenses, EVF and shoulder rig bits from my 5D3, I easily made use of them on the C100. Add to that the various video bits from my Sony Z1 kit and it was easy to make the Mark i a nice shooting camera...and at a good price. I also already had a Ninja.. but to be honest I've never really needed the extra bitrate for basically web based content.

I too run the Ninja Blade with our C100 MKI, we shoot a lot of green screen interviews and Prores HQ with 10 bit/4:2:2 is better, but the C100s internal AVCHD is surprisingly good for being so low data rate. Really cannot tell the difference visually between the AVCHD 24Mbps and the Prores HQ at 220 Mbps from the Blade most of the time unless you "break" the AVCHD codec by shooting wide pans of trees, etc.
