Heavily considering the C200 - Warranty?

So, just like the movie Happy Gilmore, I'm trying to find my happy place, somewhere between my Canon XF300s and going fully DSLR.

I've watched hours of reviews on the Canon C200 and I think it will fit well. Still trying to get close enough to hug one.

So the next question would be a warranty. Square Trade's warranty through BH sounds a tad high at 10% of the camera cost.

Anyone else have opinions on warranties? I know Canon offers a maintenance plan, haven't looked at it that much yet.

So $600... How much would a repair cost? Question is would you mail me $600 and I’ll promise to repair your camera in next couple of years but if nothing goes wrong I pocket the money? The other thing after 4-5 years cameras aren’t desirable.

I don't know much about Square Trade, but I will say that I just had a really positive experience with Canon's service department. Had a minor issue with my C300mk1, they took care of it quickly and inexpensively. And note that I had to ship my camera body to their service center...if you livev

Also note that the C200 can be covered in several of the levels of Canon Professional Services (CPS). That's cool because many of the other Cinema EOS cameras can currently only be covered in the $1,000/year Cinema level. Cool to see the C200 options at lower prices:
Canon Professional Services - About CPS

CPS would mostly get you discounted and expedited repairs. But they're repairs done by Canon. If Square Trade repairs are done by a third party, maybe the work will be fine, but might there be a delay in getting parts, or a backlog the slows turnaround? I'm not trying to spread FUD...just something to check out. So that's repairs.

If you want coverage for drops, spills, theft, etc, maybe look into production equipment insurance from a broker such as Athos (not an endorsement, I just had the name handy):
https://www.athosinsurance.com

Could be you could cover ALL your equipment for the cost of covering just your C200 camera. And you'd have some flexibility on how much of a deductible you want to take one, --maybe-- a clearer sense of exclusions for various thefts (ie- is there a locked car exclusion).

You know the drill. $600 for the warranty and $7500+ for the camera isis enough money that I'd say it's worth a couple hours investigating the alternatives and to make sure you get what you want.

That's enough blather from me. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!

Personally I'm not a fan of extended warranty plans.

The manufacturer warranty is important in case the camera is faulty or QC is poor & things need fixing from the get-go, but beyond that you're far more likely to need insurance for theft/accidental damage than you are a warranty repair.
