7D Faux Anamorphic Music Video

Hey guys, just completed another music video project shot on 7D, and for this one we tried to simulate the smearing effect of anamorphic lenses. Thought there may be some interest. What do you think of the look?

That's awesome! I really dig that look. Would you mind sharing how you did that?

Thanks!

Chad, take a close look at the bokeh in the first shot of the video, and see if you can guess. :)

Only thing I can really guess...

The Video Copilot Optical Flares plug-in for AE?

Dying to know man... :)

It's all a practical effect. No post production.

Here's the secret: fishing line. Carefully attach a bit of fishing line to your lens behind the rear element. We used some thin adhesive gum. You have to make sure it's perfectly vertical in the final position and that nothing is block the lens mount or sensor.

What this does is somewhat equivalent to the two point star filters people use, but it happens *after* the image is captured. Light refracts through the fishing line horizontally. That way, it doesn't fudge your clarity, and the lines don't bend with barrel distortion (which they do when shooting this wide with a 2 point star filter).

That trick was lent to me by Billy at PC&E rentals in Atlanta. This was the first time I'd used it. I like it better than the filters or the post effects, personally.

I am definitely going to try that! Thanks for sharing. This is some really good looking stuff.

Thanks for sharing your secrets, very simple but effective trick.

Also watched the behind the scenes... Short, sharp and effective. Enjoyed it very much. Thanks for sharing.
