Shooting a war film on the 7D

Just started shooting a war film on the 7D and these are some screen grabs I took of the footage of a war film I'm doing the Cinematography on.

Wow.

The first image looks like a work of art.

Can you fill us in on the picture style and grading you used?

Mike Peterson March 1st, 2010 08:58 PM

really really nice looking stuff! Very impressed!

Jonanthan Carr March 1st, 2010 09:04 PM

Well the Picture style I used was a User Def. 1 which goes as follows
Picture style standard
sharpness +1
contrast +2
Saturation -2
color tone 0

for grading I had to desaturate the image further to 50% and contrast was added to 5 and thats about it so far.

Mike Peterson March 1st, 2010 09:28 PM

Dang, well I guess I'll have to try that picture style. Lighting awesome, composition great. Make me want to pick up one of those flo's too

Thanks, its gonna be interesting to see what happens when we start blowing things up....

Scott Nodine March 1st, 2010 11:51 PM

Awesome look you've got there!

Are you shooting with the 24p setting on the 7D?
What lenses?

Jonanthan Carr March 2nd, 2010 12:06 AM

yep 24fps, I'm not much of a fan of zooms. So I use all prime lenses from Nikon and Zeiss. Soon will be upgrading to all Zeiss lenses. I don't use canon because I notice that sometimes the aperture fluctuate while recording, so I just clear away from them. Plus these Nikon lenses are decent glass.
Zeiss 18mm f3.5
Nikon 28mm f2.8
Nikon 35mm f1.4
Nikon 50mm f2
Nikon 85mm f1.8
Nikon 135mm f2.8

Looking awesome man!

Great location & lighting. Is it all natural?

Jonanthan Carr March 2nd, 2010 11:17 AM

Well the Key light in the talking scene in natural. Added some fill light to reduce some of the harshness of the sun through the windows until I got some nice edge light on his face. For the torture scene, what natural light I used was empty fill. So I added a key light for the Arab and back light for the one of the soldiers when his body was profile to the camera. Also added some fill to the scene and pretty much on every mid or close up had 2 grips hollywood the b-boards during takes.

Forgot to mention both rooms were shot at a 4/5.6 split

Very nice images. After grading you are going to have a great look. Even like this it is excellent.

Brian Brown March 3rd, 2010 12:33 AM

Wow, crazy awesome look. Thanks for the lens insights.

Did you build the set, too, or is it a real place?

Jonanthan Carr March 3rd, 2010 12:11 PM

We shot on location....... in Pennsylvania. It's an 200 plus year old barn. This is a type of scene where your better off blowing out the windows to make it more convincing. So I put a Sheet of Opal on the windows to soften the edge light on the Main actor's face with adding enough fill.

Great images Jonanthan. I just got a 7D and I am considering using Nikon glass. What kind of mounting adaptor are you using for the Nikkors? Are you having any issues with focus at infinity?

Thanks
