Just Picked Up My New Canon 7D!! Pics Inside..(first cam was broken)

i just picked up the 7d today, i plan on getting the juiced xlr tripod mount adapter that has the 3.5mm pin for the mic input on the 7d, and also going to get a few other things for it, so it will be my cam for the next little bit...until i get my hands on a sony ex1r...i plan on purchasing one of those by april or may...so i will have the canon 7d as my backup, and alternate camcorder/camera...

anyway here are the pics of it fresh outta the box....

also i had to take the first one back because it was making a really terrible sound, like a sizzly weird sound....here is a video i took with it before i exchange it out....you can hear the internal mic picking up the sound...what is it??

also how do i turn off the auto adjustment for sound levels?

You can't disable the auto gain control on the camera, unfortunately. That's one of the limitations of it being a DSLR and not a video camera. What do you shoot? Interested in hearing your plans for integrating the EX1r with the 7D.

what about one of these? one of them says something about removing the limiter but the other one is cheap....

The second one will add a constant loud noise at an extremely high frequency to make the camera keep the AGC all the way down. The idea is that you then EQ that frequency out in post. I don't really know how well it works, though.

i would assume its around or above 14-16 khz....if its below than it would kill the sound but doubt it...linear eq shelfing above 14-16khz is the norm most of the time so i guess it just might work...

what xlr input is the best and will bolt under cam, and let tripod under that, and takes a batter? i want one that when i plug my xlr mic into it, the audio goes to the cam's mic input in sync, so the cam pics it up instead of the onboard mono mic...

i found juicelink but are they the only ones?

That "broken camera noise" sounds to me like the lens Image Stabilizer after autogain turned up the input really loud in the absence of other sounds.

If you enable IS on the new lens and record in a quiet environment, i wonder if you'll hear the same thing.

Corey Benoit March 4th, 2010 08:06 PM

it was the stabilizer, all good now...

2 questions....is the stabilizer needed for handheld video? cause i am shooting an independent movie this spring....

also what is the difference between a EF 18-135mm IS lens and the 15-85mm lense? i currently have the 18-135mm, i read about the fact that the 15-85mm lense on the 7d is equal to the 24-146mm on a full fram camera, what does this mean and should i get this lense?

i checked the auto gain on it today, spoke really quiet for a few seconds and gradually got louder to see if the sound stabilized and got quieter than it should....it didnt...so i dont think the auto gain is AS BAD as everyone says it is..

also will this lense be useful?

will this lense be useful?

has anyone used the juicedlink dn101 with a preamp? does it disable the AGC in a way that it cam be equilized out? or is it blatently audible that the left or right track must be deleted?

Andrew is correct. The camera was fine. That noise is the Image Stabilization on the lens.

And by the way, the problem with the Auto Gain Control is that it raises the volume level of background noise in the absence of any foreground noise. So you end up with a mess of loud, hissy white noise instead of natural ambient sound.
