Motion blur when panning?

I've watched some other sample videos from the T2i involving panning and the video remained crisp and clear. When I do some test shots with my T2i in my well lit apartment, using the kit lens 18-55IS, hand held gentle/slow panning, I get blur/distortion from panning. I feel like there is some basic concept I am missing. Is my lens insufficient to do a clean pan? Do I need some kind of stabalized set up for the T2i?

Thanks.

What shutter speed are you running? In general, you will want to run 1/50 for 24fps and 1/60 for 30fps. That balances the blur and strobe artifacts. If you run a faster shutter, say 1/100, you will get less blur, but the pan might now look jerky.

And, yes, being handheld doesn't help. You might also have some vertical micro-motion that will add to the blur. A good tripod will help.

But if you're running a shutter of, say, 1/30, that would would give too much blur.
