shooting 720p 25?

Hi all,

I'd like to intercut with EX footage shot 720p at 25fps. The 7d only offers 720p at 50p, which is obviously great for slomo, but what is everyone using as the best way to get to 25p from the 50p? I use a FCP workflow if it helps. Do I need a transcode in MPEGStreamclip? Or conform in Cinema Tools?

Thanks for any input.

Gary.

Just shoot 1080/25. Don't go near 720 with this camera unless you absolutely have too.

cheers Liam,

Do you mean don't touch 720 with the EX or the 7d? I have been shooting 1080p25 with the 7d and transcoding to ProRes(LT) 720p25 up til now. Also transcoding the 720p25 EX to the same. Do you reckon that's the best way?

thanks,

Gary.

720 on the 7D can be problematic, it introduces more digital artifacts due to pixel binning and the moire is worse, plus you are losing a stop of light for no reason.

720 on the EX works great.

I often combine the two on the same timeline, but I transcode the 7D to 1080 ProRes which gives me more flexibility.

I think your method of shooting 1080/25p and transcoding it to 720p would yield the best quality. The 7d's 720 implementation has problems that you dont really *need* to face, so why bother? Its not that 720 is the problem, its 720 as recorded by the 7d.

I shoot 720/50p for slowmo, but otherwise its all 1080 for me.

cheers!
