Tethered Long-Segment Shooting on 7D

I am hoping this topics has not been over-discussed, but I can't find a definitive answer about best-practices regarding 12+ minute shooting on a 7D when tethered to a MacBook Pro.

I realize a test will give me my answer, but I am wondering what feelings from the group are on this specific topic.

Thanks, all!

Are you asking how best to get around the 12min limit?

If so then the answer is unfortunately that you can't. Tethering to a computer does not change the limit.

I can understand your confusion.

When you see a thread like this one:-

7D Canon 7d HDMI out

This is a little more conclusive (video evidence)

Canon 60D vs. 7D HDMI Output Resolution Test CheesyCam

Yes ifull HDMI output can be done.

However, I also recollect other posts that have said their camera overheated and shutdown. However I am not sure if this was from using record mode and full HDMI output - I think it was.

You'll need to do tests in a variety of situations and you'll need to 'tether' with an HDMI cable. Software to capture from HDMI input is rare - I think Avid MC only just offered it with the Matrox MX02 in the earlier versions of Media Composer 5.

If it works let us know your choice of software and if there were any overheating problems.

The sensor overheats, irregardless of what you're outputting to.

I know a couple of production companies that just budget for cooked cameras.

I believe you also can not get a completely clear display when monitoring or recording via HDMI. There is always the focus box and little red recording dot.
