Shooting slow mo on 600D/T3i

Hi.

I'm looking into making a power kiting movie with a Canon 600d. When I do the slow motion effect the rider will be in the air so there shouldnt really be a problem with morphing!

I understand its best if I set the camera to 50fps but this means shooting in 720p instead of 1080p. Is it possible to shoot the slow motion bits in 720p and the rest in 1080p or is 720p good enough?

I guess 720 is fine for the web, just I'd be interested how I'd get around this when I want to burn to blu-ray?

Cheers

How do you actually get the slo=mo effect?

Most people use twixtor for their slow motion effect. If you shot in 720p 50/60 frame per second then you can conform it to 25 or 30 frame per second depend on where you live. This will give you a slight slow motion effect and it help out twixtor, optical flow, or whatever slow motion plug in you're using. You should try shooting in 1080p and see how bad the morphing is.

Okay thanks.

Is it a no go to use 720p 50fps footage with 1080p 25p footage in the same movie then?

You CAN, but you'll want to scale down the 1080p25 footage to 720p so that they match. Otherwise you can upscale 720p to 1080p, but that usually has undesirable results. When shooting with a DSLR, remember the 180 shutter rule. If you're going to shoot at 720p50, you'll want your shutter speed at 1/100

Hmm so if I were to downscale the 1080p footage I might as well just shoot it all in 720p?

there is a tutorial online that says you can shoot at 24p and twixtor will do just fine slowing it down, is this true?

depends on what you call "fine", but in any case 60P @ 720 will be finer, also set the shutter speed as high as possible, some nice samples out there from 60D and Twixtor

You can use 60fps if you set your camera to NTSC will help just a little bit more when you slow mo.

Are US Canon DSLRs PAL/NTSC switchable?
