Jon - that was absolutely AWESOME! I plan to shoot a couple music videos next year. Hopefully I'll have a video capable DSLR by then. I think it lends itself perfectly to this type of work. Wow again - loved everything about your piece!

And, yes, it's a fantastic music video.

This leads me to wonder if a similar style could be done with the 5D MkII video function. Set a 1/30 shutter time, have the actors move slowly, then playback at a fast rate by dropping frames. The slow shutter now becomes a fast shutter - if you drop 3 of every 4 frames, the shutter is now an effective 1/120 when played at 30p. Play it back at 24p and you get 1 3.2x speedup with a 1/96 effective shutter.

Besides the artistic aspects (model, set, lighting, concept...), this was compelling technically due the photo quality and time effects. The 5D MkII, D90 and future DVSLRs, not to mention RED cameras, will make this much easier than what Mr. Kuriyama faced with his project and the D200.

I wonder if you could simply use compression and key frames to do something like this albeit w/o the control. It would be fun to use Compressor to generate effects.

I have a short film that I shot the same way on a Canon 1D mkII, but only ran about 16,000 still frames for a 5 minute piece. On the other hand I did a lot of storyboarding. Mine is currently in the festival circuit though, so no internet version. The extra frame rate of the 1D mk2 make a huge difference in the smoothness of the video.
