WPPI Tradeshow Coverage (shot on 5D)

Hey guys,

bit late with the post, but check out some coverage we did for LenRentals.com at WPPI a few weeks ago. Shot on 2 5Ds with a Canon 24-70 2.8L on a Glidecam 4000HD and 70-200 2.8 IS L handheld, audio done with a Fostex CF recorder and a G2 Senny wireless kit.

Nicely done. Very polished.

However, I noticed that the 720P video plays very choppily on my Macbook Pro. I downloaded the MP4 file and it's indicating a maximum framerate of something less than 20-24fps, and it's skipping frames. QT Player indicates a data rate of 1300kbps, which is well within the realm of playable videos. I've done numerous 5D Mark II videos myself which I down-rez'd to 720P at data rates WAY higher than that (3500+) and they play very smoothly at a perfect 30fps. I've encoded with Quicktime Pro, Compressor and DV Kitchen (which uses the awesome x264 encoder).

I'm curious: what did you use to encode that MP4 file?

It plays fine on the machine I am currently using which is not very fast. It's a single-core athlon at 2.2Ghz without much memory.

The 5D2 really seems to work just fine as a video camera in interviews. The only negative I noticed is the horrible show floor lighting. I would like to see a front fill light to warm up the facial tones and get rid of some of the eye socket shadow. I don't mean a strong video light but something more like an eyelight. I guess the 5D isn't a miracle machine but it does seem that its high sensitivity will allow more subtle lighting schemes.
