Price drop on the 5d
Hi,
I have noticed that the 5d has been dropped in price meaning that there is about a £400 in difference now between the 7D and the 5D.. I was planning on getting the 7D but now that it's just a £400 difference in price.. Do you think it's worth going for the 5D now?? |
I have both and prefer the 5D2.
Others will have different views on this obviously, depending on what features they need in a camera. Ultimately, you must weigh up for yourself the pros and cons of each camera based on which features you like/need and which you don't. Avey |
Hmm yeah..
think am gonna save my money get a second hand 7D and splash out on good lenses :) |
Where's the price drops in the US? :-)

At B&H:
Canon | EOS 5D Mark II Digital Camera (Camera Body) | 2764B003 Here's a great link for tracking availability of the 5D and accessories: Canon 5D Mark II In Stock Tracker - NowInStock.net Seems Nikon is bringing out and HDSLR soon, and Canon wants more people to get on board before that happens. |
Yeah, Nikon has been stuck in the 720p range for the DSLR with video, but word is they are about to release a 1080p model, so I can understand Canon wanting to scope up as many videographers before that happens.

Yes, I'm looking forward to trying out the new Nikon. News is that it has full HD, although some rumours are that it will be 720p like the D3s. I'm more interested in that it will offer faster AF control during video and more manual override plus decent sound recording options etc..
|
The question for me isn't so much about 1080p vs. 720p. It's about the codec, and to some degree about rolling shutter. Even at 720p, the rolling shutter has been worse than Canon's. But the codec is the area where Canon really wins the game, IMHO.
If Nikon produces 1080p with lots of jello and M-JPEG, the camera still won't be able to compete on the video side. Hopefully, they'll push the market forward... |

Funny this thread popped up as a friend with the 300s has been discussing with me dumping his Nikon gear and going Canon. He shoots both stills and video. When's Nikon supposed to have a competitor to the 5D out?

Nikon will be launching more new models soon, Robert.

Don't get me wrong, personally I'd love to be able to shoot 720p24, 720p30, and 720p60 on my 5D2. If I could, I'd probably never use 1080p given that I only distribute to the web, and 720p is ideal for HD on the web in my opinion. I think it's flat out stupid that Canon didn't put a 720p24 and/or 720p30 mode on the 7D, and given that, I'm not expecting it on the 5D2 either. But, I'll be happy with 1080p24, so maybe I should shut up now. |

For video, the 7D is a little more user friendly with the additional buttons, but I still (personally) don't like the crop factor. |
