Difference between 5D MOV files and converted AVI files
 

Hi,

Can some one please explain this to me in plain English, I can not really work out the best choise.


This is all in PAL region;

I have been trying to find the best way to edit my 5D projects on PC, I have tried Edius 5 and Premiere 4 and Cineform.

Original MOV file was 11 seconds, 30fps, 56.9meg large, data bitrate 41954kbps, Total bitrate 43399kbps, Red Render bar, 1920x1088

1- I converted the MOV files to AVI using NeoScene, it made my clips longer at 25fps;

13 seconds, 25fps, 252meg large, data bitrate 161686kbps, Total bitrate 163097kbps, 1920x1088, clips seems to be more contrasty and saturated, a bit darker, Yellow Render bar, easier to edit in PP.

2- I converted the MOV files to AVI HQ with Edius, it made my clips same lenght at 25fps;

11 seconds, 25fps, 275meg large, data bitrate 208773kbps, Total bitrate 210309kbps, 1920x1088, clips seems to be a bit flater and less saturated, a bit darker, Yellow Render bar, easier to edit in PP.

So why Neoscene makes them slowmotion but Canopus HQ doesn't, why the bitrates are different, and which one is better?

I believe the 'standard NeoScene' doesn't allow for 25fps conversion..it makes your 30fps 5DMk2 camera files into 29.97fps .avi's, but it does now allow for 24/25fps files from the 7D.
How are you making them into 25 fps files? Are you dropping them into a 25fps project?
I do all my editing in Premiere Pro in a 29.97 project and then convert to 25fps if I need to on the completed edit.
There are other Cineform products that do allow for frame rate conversions to 25fps.

I am using basic NeoScene and it doesn't give me any option, it automaticaly converts them to 25 (I was also wondering why it changed them to25?!), I do not see any option any where for 25 or 29.97. I think I saw that option on the trial version of ProspectHD.

Can any one from Cineform or whoever is familiar with this explain that to me please?

I'm not in front of my Cineform right now, but in HDLink, you should be able to go to Prefs (or Options, I forget) and set your Output Frame Rate (or similar).

NeoScene doesn't give you that option at all. I am not sure why I bought it, it seems to be useless. Somehow it convert my footage to 25fps and slow motion.

Perhaps I have to stick to Eduis and get a refund for my NeoScene (I wish)!

Neoscene costs $129 & ProspectHD costs $749. The latter has more functionality which is reflected in the price.
