firmware 2.0.3 and external stereo directional mics

Hi guys!

Im looking for a good external stereo directional mic. I know that external recorders are the best option but Im looking for something easier, thats an external mic. I want to record ambient sound (nature, seawaves, etc)

Now that AGC can be desactivated maybe there are some good mics that can be used. I don't want IS noise or noise when using slider to be recorded.

Any solution to achieve that?

Thanks.

Tomeu

In the past I've used the Rode NT4 and have been happy with it. It's a fairly inexpensive xy stereo mic.

Rode Stereo Video Mic?

Are you looking for a hotshoe mounted solution? If so the Rode Stereo Video Mic is pretty highly regarded in it's price range. Here is a B&H overview of several mics including the Rode SVM ( http://tiny.cc/yyquE ).

I've got a Rode SVM that I am selling because I'm doing most of my stereo stuff externally on the Zoom H4N so the Rode isn't getting much use. The mic is in excellent like new condition. PM me if you're interested.

Tahnks for the responses!

One question: Rode SVM or NTG-1 for outdoors?

Tahnks again.

Depends

"One question: Rode SVM or NTG-1 for outdoors?"

It really depends on what you're shooting. The NTG-1 is a directional shotgun mic and hence would be better for shooting dialog outdoors. The SVM is a stereo mic that will be less directional but will pick up more of the surroundings and ambient sound. Kind of like the difference between using a telephoto or a wide angle lens. Unfortunately there's no one mic that does it all or fits all shooting purposes. Plan to eventually end up with several mics in your kit.

Cheers,

Scott

More Info

Tomeu,

If you're looking for more information and samples of what the different mics and combinations sound like check out the audio thread here at DV Info Net. You'll find a series of tests at the top of that thread that Jon Fairhurst did that give you a good overview of 5D audio.

Hi Scott, I've edited your post in order to change your link to the exact same series of John Fairhurst audio tests which live here on DV Info Net. I understand that you're new here, but as a general rule, we always want to point folks to resources which already exist on this site instead of sending them away somewhere else. Thanks for understanding.

Thanks Chris. I wasn't aware Jon's series was on this site also. I definitely need to spend some more time digging around the forum here!

Audio-Technica

I use a Audio-Technica AT825 Stereo microphone and Beyerdynamic MVK72-K3 stereo XLR to mini cable on my 7D with very good results. AT825 is now discontinued but you may consider the new model AT8022. This microphone and the cable are available at B&H. Another relatively inexpensive stereo microphone to consider is Sony ECM-MS957.

Hope this helps.
