Lightcraft workshop 77 or 82mm fader nd filter

I was wondering if it is a concern to get the 77mm fader nd if I have a few lenses that are at 82mm filter size diameter? With a step up/down ring applied to fit 77mm fader nd filter on the larger lens will this create distortion in the viewing area or something I am not aware of. Most lenses fall in the 72 to 77 mm sizes for canon L glass so 77mm seems a great fit for me and plus it is a lot cheaper....should I be concerned about something here?

Hey Joshua. It depends if which lenses you are using

For the 16-35mm from what i have ready even the 82mm one will block some.
For the 17-40 the 77mm one with block only a little bit.

I am wondering if anyone has used the 82mm with the 16-35 and at where does it stop vignetting stop.

thanks

Yeah, I'm trying to decide between buying Fader ND's that fit my lenses (i.e. 77mm filter on a 77mm lens). Or buy all 82mm filters (the largest they currently make) and buy step down rings to get to 77mm with the hopes of reducing vignetting.

Here are our lenses:

85mm f/1.2 (72mm)
24-70mm f/2.8 (77mm)
70-200mm f/2.8 (77mm)
16-35mm f/2.8 (82mm)
15mm f/2.8 fisheye (no filter threads)

The one I'm wondering about the most is the 24-70mm. Do you think a 77mm Fader ND would vignette on it at 24mm?

The Fader ND 77mm is already effectively an 82mm filter in a step-down ring. To quote from their website To avoid vignetting, we use 1 stops larger front glass. e.g. a 77mm Fader ND, equips with a 77mm back thread (attach to camera lens), and a 82mm front glass/ filter thread. Light Craft Workshop - Fader ND adjustable ND filter (ND2~400)

It's fine on my 24-105mm F4L & 24mm F1.4L. It's OK on my Tokina 20-40mm too. All these lenses take 77mm filters.

Wow! Didn't know that. Thanks! (now that I look at their site, it's obvious....my bad)

there is actually an 86mm version. Anyway lightcraft Hong Kong is selling the same FADER ND from the same source. Some of them are labelled NATURE, FADER etc. Works ok. Bigger thread size with step down ring is the way to go.

I was planning getting the 86mm (with 82mm threads) Lightcraft since I use lenses from 82mm thread (16-35L) down to 62mm (sigma 30mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.4), but I'm having trouble finding step up/down rings for all sizes. It looks like I need step up rings for 77mm-82mm, 72mm-82mm, and 62mm-82mm. Any idea where to get all these? I don't really want to buy more than one ND. I have a matte box, and considered getting 4x4's or 6x4's, but I won't always have the matte box mounted.

Step up rings.

I bought this one £3.95.

Not arrived yet. My Fader ND won't be here for three weeks either. So cannot comment on the quality. It is from the UK.

With regards

Jeff

I've been waiting for Lightcraft to restock the 77 for ages and they're not replying to emails asking when it might be available. Looks like I'll have to order the 86mm version.

This ring arrived really quick yesterday and I tried it on my kit 28 to 105mm lens. It fits right into the hood which is a relief, so it looks like I will be able to use the 82mm Fader on a 77mm filter thread with the hood on. I will have to fit the hood, then the filter of course.

With regards

Jeff

I ordered a couple Fader ND's 10 days ago and they supposedly won't ship for 5 weeks! Oh well, I can wait I guess.

Realize that the Fader ND's have a built-in step-down ring. The 77mm has 82mm front glass. The 82mm has 86mm front glass.
