Timelapse capabilities via firmware?

I was wondering if all it would take is some sort of firmware update in order to have time-lapse (Using photos not video) so that I don't have to buy the 150 dollar intervalometer. I used the built-in functions on my Nikon D700 and I miss them.

I guess a second question would be which product have you used (I see plenty for 20 or 30 dollars on ebay, just not sure)? Do you stick with Canon or do you buy cheaper?

I get the feeling we aren't going to see anymore substancial firmware updates for the 5D II, but, as a feature request for the 5D III, I would love to see timelaps included in camera.

I'm hoping for something for the 1Dm4. It 'sounds' like a simple enough firmware type update...

I got a cheap one off eBay and it works a treat.

+1 on the cheap ones. Magic lantern lantern has a built in intervalometer, but its not at full resolution for some reason.

I bought one of the cheapies off e-bay. I have no complaints.

i bought the expensive Canon, and it seems pretty cheap. Works great though. But it sure was expensive.

I bought a cheap one to experiment with, turns out it works great. I do wish it had an on/off switch but that is not much of a problem really.

A quick time lapse I did with it.

I bought the Canon version and I'm waking up early tomorrow morning to hopefully catch the sunrise...and later that day the sunset. Will do more time-lapse stuff as the Spring comes along.
