Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

Test 1 of HDR mode on 5D with Mosaic optical anti alias filter.

Used Nikon 50mm f 1.4, Cinestyle profile at 24P.

Showing 3 out 5 HDR modes 3EV,4EV & 5EV.

This is the first time I tried Magic lantern and this feature was the compelling reason to do so
and so far I find it very interesting indeed.

I think there is an issue with fast motion, (note the passing truck in window) I think this is aggravated by using 24P,
I will do human motion test next and will include 30P so there
will be more frames to interpolate.

Most impressive. We have done a lot of real estate videos in the South of France & the big bugbear was always that if you expose correctly for the interiors then the windows are blown out. Property videos look like a perfect application for this implementation of HDR as there isn't much movement when you are just panning over the furniture. Then instead of white windows we would have the beautiful blue skies.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

Impressive indeed Nigel, also, since like you I do a lot of real estate videos as well.
This version of ML now gives your 5D adjustable FRAMERATES between 31-1.
Instead of just 30-24. So now you can have MORE incredible low light performance or timelapse and slow shutter blurring effects. (vehicles passing buildings, night shots etc.)

Also I must add since you mentioned real estate, that when you add the mosaic VAF-5D2 filter you also now have moire free and alias free buildings, shingles, bricks, cable lines, water etc.

The 5D has truly been on an extended life.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

I have recently been using a Panasonic GH2 with 7-14mm F/4 lens for shooting real estate videos instead of the 5DII & been delighted at the moire & alias free footage that I get compared to a Canon DSLR.

The Mosaic VAF-5D2 filter is interesting but a little too pricey plus I love to use my Canon 16-35mm F/2.8L for interiors & apparently the quality drops off for lenses with a focal length of 24mm & below. I think that I can live with moire & aliasing if the HDR is as good as it looks.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

Wow !
How hard was combining in Post?
Super interesting esp with the new Frame rates working on the 5D. I know they were concerned because of the larger sensor.
There also seems to be a new focus assist as well in Magic Lantern (not just the window) that shows you what is in focus, correct?
I am very interested in this feature as well.
Any idea when this is going to be released to more of the public,

Thanks Ted!!!

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

Sorry for the late reply John as I was busy doing some more tests.

Splitting and combining in post is a one click affair. The developers provided a command line script that automates the process.
This script and its corresponding softwares comes together with the 5D magic lantern+HDR beta
when you give a donation.

There is a ton of features that practically makes the 5D a different camera.

For focus aids there is peaking aside from the magic window, which gives a windowed enlargement
of the scene. -and it can stay on while recording.

For exposure, you have zebras, histogram and waveform.

You can plug in headphones for audio monitoring and control its volume.

Variable frame rates! other than 24-30 now you have 4-31.

4fps is useful for lowlight as this increases lowlight capability a lot.

The list goes on and on.

This is already being released albeit beta. But its working already.

Heres a 2nd test, this time shot in 30P, includes some human movement to test.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

Thanks Ted,
Happy New Year
I didn't realize I could donate & download Unified and run it on a 5D.
I thought it was rewritten for the 5D. Or is there a direct link ?
The wiki is confusing
Thanks,
J

What's supposed to happen after you donate to gain access to the 5DII beta? I donated this morning and am wondering.

Re: 5D "HDR video" in Magic Lantern Beta

on the donation page there is now a link that says
something like "return to developer site" that will take you to a bitbucket page that says "Alex is sharing code with you" Download there.
