Seeing as how Canon just announced the new improved 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM without IS I am pretty sure that this is just a typo. Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM - Standard zoom - Canon UK

I also expect that it's a typo.
Good catch though, Ted! |

Definitely a typo. Would have been great, though!

Poor show from Canon - I can't understand why they don't have IS yet for this lens, considering likes of the Tameron 17-50 cropped lens which has been out for years has it.

That Canon has IS on their f/4 and f/2.8 EF-S zooms tends to say that IS is beneficial at mid-range focal lengths. That Canon released the 24/2.8 and 28/2.8 lenses with IS says that it can be beneficial even at wide angles.
However, Nikon's 24-70 doesn't have VR and it lists for $1,900 in the US. Nikon Store - AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED By contrast, Canon was only charging $1,300 for their 24-70. It seems that Canon's priority is to establish higher prices, rather than to provide new features. The new 24-70 is $2,300 - without IS. It's hard to blame them. The Japanese Yen is very high right now and that has made life difficult for Japanese tech companies. Since Nikon and Canon don't have strong non-Japanese competition, they have the option of asking higher prices. This also explains why the 5D3 is priced significantly higher than the 5D2. |
Re: 24-70mm f2.8L II in new 5d3 video listed with IS ???
I had missed that the new 24mm & 28mm lenses have IS. That is really bizarre considering that Canon don't even make a 50mm or 85mm with IS which would arguably benefit more from image stabilisation.

Agreed!
Open Note to Canon: Please release an EF 85mm f/1.4L IS. The 85/1.2L is an awesome portrait lens, but we all know that it's fly-by-wire focus ring is poor for video. The 85/1.8 is a good value, but it has a short travel ring and isn't up to L status. Zeiss, Nikon, Sigma, and even Rokonon/Samyang offer 85/1.4 lenses. But none are supported with Peripheral Illumination Control in-camera. The Zeiss and Samyang don't offer autofocus. The Nikon isn't 100% compatible. The Sigma AF is weak. You can kick their butts by being the first to offer 85/1.4 with IS. Keep in mind that we need speed for low light. With video, we shoot at 1/50 or 1/60 no matter what (for a "normal" look.) So we need speed. And we still need AF for our video to look smooth when our tripods and hanheld rigs aren't as smooth as we wish they were. Okay, if you can't deliver IS on an f/1.4 lens, at least deliver a good focus ring with no fly-by-wire. The 85/1.2L simply isn't acceptable for video shooting. Your lens lineup has a significant hole for L-lens video shooters. Sincerely, Everybody who wants to shoot video with Canon L prime lenses. |
