5DM2 and Tascam DR100 audio sync problem

I shot an interview on Friday where I now have my audio out of sync by about 4-5 frames. Here is my setup:

Canon 5DM2
Tascam DR-100
Sescom line to mic level cable for 5DM2
Sennheiser MEK66 mic

I run the audio into the Tascam and then use the Sescom cable to go from the line out into the 5DM2 mic input. I set the audio levels on the Tascam and then set the levels on the 5DM2 so that they match.

When I went home and checked the files I noticed that the audio was out of sync. The weird part was that the audio was about 4 frames ahead of the video. I would think that it would be delayed and not advanced.

Has anyone had this issue before? I have shot this way many times in the past and haven't noticed it being this off.

Thanks,

Daniel Weber

Re: 5DM2 and Tascam DR100 audio sync problem

I use a Marantz PMD661 but record with the same setup. I have -12db tone loaded into a folder in the recorder and use that to match the camera's levels so they correspond to the recorder. No sync problems.

I agree that if there is some issue between the recorder and the camera, the problem should be a sync delay, not the other way around. I'd suggest getting an adapter cable to run the mic directly into the camera and take the recorder out of the chain and see what happens, so you can determine if the problem is in the camera or the recorder. I don't see how a simple pass-through can cause the audio to be recorder ahead of the video. Even if your recorder settings were changed, like from 48 to 44 kHz that wouldn't cause a 4-5 frame shift. Weird problem.
