Thanks for the post, so cool to see that shot. I am hunting around for more info on the 1DX to add to my MKIII for still work. Nice to see how much people love the 1DX.

Photographer Kevin Mullins who has both the 5D3 & 1DX did a nice review here. http://www.kevinmullinsphotography.c...otography.html Kevin said to me that while the 1DX is a lovely camera unless I wanted to shoot action sports that it didn't really have enough over the 5D3 to justify the price & even had some drawbacks e.g. heavier & no silent shutter mode.

I had found Kevin's review in my searching. Being a 5D MKIII owner and really happy the camera for stills only, I need a second body for a lot of my work.

The reason for looking at the 1DX is 12-14 fps for action sports jobs, and for tough environment I can end up working in. Trying to justify buying a new body at twice the price to go from 7fps to 14 fps. That is why I am doing the research. Like all gear though it needs to earn its keep quickly.

Paul, I use a variety of cameras from different companies, but prefer to use the 5D over the EOS-1 D X and rarely need ultra-fast bursts of 14 fps for my professional stills work. In fact my most-used camera for video during 2012 was actually the older Mark II not the Mark III.
In terms of resolution, the 5D II/III and 1DX are all very similar at lower ISO and the 5DIII is slightly sharper than the 1DX at equal ISO settings, (both are of course better than the Mark II at elevated ISO).

But in reality, all three are superb and not worth worrying about separating them in most situations.

From a video standpoint and offering stills at 18MP, I think that the Panasonic GH3 16MP body matched with a selection of pro-grade f/2.8 lenses with IS and video auto-focus/manual options, at a much lower weight and price tag, is a viable different choice. The extremely sharp 7-14mm zoom also provides ultra-wide shots and the two new 12-35mm & 35-100mm (24-70mm & 70-200mm fast IS 2.8 FF equivalents) match the full frame Canon in most respects except size and weight.

However I have always preferred full frame SLR cameras, even during my film emulsion days, so for me the Nikon D4/D800/D600 and Canon 5D/6D always seem to fill more of my requirements than the D7000/7D.

The 1DX contains a lot of things I look for in a full frame DSLR, but also many that I don't, so for that price point I'd rather use one of the other full-frame bodies on offer and then use money saved to purchase more important items of equipment, especially lenses.

Thank you Tony for taking the time to let me know your choice and why. The more I look at the 1DX the more I think a second MKIII would suit me fine. The 14fps is nice but would only be used 5% of the time I shoot with it so as you say better to use the money on more quality glass or a C100 to back up my C300.

Just wanted to check back and let you know I did both, purchased C300 glass and a 1DX. Both were a very smart business move. The 5D MKIII is a great camera and fits most jobs, but the 1DX is an amazing still camera I see why they charge that much more. I have only had it for two days and the pictures are spot on. Along with features that are perfect for me.

So as you can see in the classified I am selling my MKIII.

I'm glad that you made the right choice that you're happy with, Paul. Which lenses did you finally match with the C300 & 1DX bodies?

Thanks Tony it was the right choice for me.

For my C300 I mostly use Canon 17-55 and Canon 10-22.

Other options I have for the C300 but mostly use for stills on the 1DX.

8-15mm fisheye
14mm 2.8
17mm tilt and shift
16-35mm 2.8
50mm 1.2
24-105mm
70-200mm 2.8 II
100mm 2.8 Macro
300mm 4
1.4x extender III

This gives me some options with both cameras. When I feel I need a specific lens, I try then buy if it will earn its keep. Looking to upgrade the 300mm to 2.8 and also get a 500mm next spring.
