Sigma 120-300/2.8

Hello fella filmmakers…

Anyone of you that have used the Sigma 120-300/2.8 OS? It looks like that they are about to launch a new version of this lens… anyone know if it’s just a new cover?

I’m about to order this lens, and would like to know if anyone have problem with it or any other useful info. I can still get hold of the old version and probably will order that one with a 2x converter.

cheers

Re: Sigma 120-300/2.8

Marcus, here is some information that I gave for filming with this superb lens:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/canon-eo...-hsm-lens.html

It is without a doubt one of the best zoom lenses that I've ever used for stills & video. The image stabilizer is great and the Manual focus ring is smooth as butter.
Probably the only down-side is the bulk and weight of this lens, but that is to be expected in an f/2.8 lens that zooms to 300mm.
I also use a polarising filter in front of the lens for most of my work.

The very latest OS model is exactly the same internally as the first OS model, so save a bunch of money if you don't require some of the small external changes made to this model. The much older 120-300mm lens without OS is a great performer, but the OS versions are a big step-up in quality and sharpness edge-to-edge. The autofocus is also much faster in the OS models.

Thanks Tony, I thought that you used that lens, but was not sure. Thanks for the info... The old version with OS is still in the shop that I usely get my lens from. Just waiting for some money from a film I just finished.

Tony, have you used the lens with a teleconverter ( I'm looking at the x2 from sigma).

Cheers

Re: Sigma 120-300/2.8

Yes, I've used the OS version a lot with converter. This lens works very well with Sigma EX 1.4X and Sigma EX 2X converters. It also works extremely well with Canon 1.4X and 2X Extenders.

Obviously you will get sharper results with 1.4X compared to the 2X tel-converters, but the with the 2X it still is very good and maintains autofocus and image stabiliser.

I prefer to use the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 OS lens with the Canon 2 X extender. It is slightly softer than the pin-sharp naked lens, but still provides beautiful video footage with the 2X, and I've also had many of my stills images published worldwide using this combo.

Re: Sigma 120-300/2.8

Today I got the 120-300 and a sigma x2 extender and yes, that is a heavy beast!!!
But the OS (IS) is working wonderful!
Next week I'm going on a tour, hope I can grab some nice tele shots...
Thanks for your input Tony.

Cheers
