GL2 /Imovie/LaCie Firewire issue.

Imovie will not recognize the GL2 on my IMAC G5 when the Lacie Firewire Drive is mounted. In fact I get the swirling color wheel until I remove the Firewire cable from the camera.

Unmount the the Lacie Firewire Drive and Imovie finds the GL2

Suggestions?

Just received this reply from Canon Support

t appears as though the external hard drive is causing the the GL2
camcorder to not be recognized by your computer. Firewire connections
require a lot of power and if one device requires too much power, then
another device (especially another high power device) may not be
recognized at all. When the hard drive is disconnected, the power is
freed up, allowing the camcorder to be detected properly.

Lacie

Common problem. Download to your internal drive with the Lacie out of the loope, then reconnect and copy over to the Lacie. Pain in the @@@ I know, but its the best work around, I have the same set up. Works fine for me.

Len, I assume that your LaCie drive is one that is self powered (i.e. takes its power from the 6-pin firewire connector?

If so, you will probably have a USB connector lead for the LaCie that has a power connector on the other end. You should be able to power the LaCie from this using a USB socket on your computer, using a 4-pin firewire socket on your computer for the data transfer - assuming that it has one.
