filters with telephoto

I just bought a SONY 1.7 telephoto lense and want to get a polarizing filter. Is it possible or wise to put the filter on the camera and then attach the lens to the filter. The cost of a 58mm filter will be considerably less than one for the larger tele but something tells me this isn't such a good idea! thanks in advance for any insights.

Welcome to DVInfo.Net, Jim!

No, the polarizing filter needs to be placed in front of the lens, before the light passes though any element. Your options are (a) to get a matte box assembly and a square cine polarizer ($$$), or (b) get a screw-on filter that fits the Sony ($).

Welcome, also, to videography...one of more costly pastimes.

Thanks for the bad news even though it was expected!
