Getting Straight! Keeping Level Headed . .. .

OKay okay okay . .said it before .. I'll say it again .. Use the 16:9 Guidelines - even though filming in 4:3 - to give:

1 - Pseudo Top and Bottom safe areas for final delivery to PAL tvs

2 - Provide an artificial Horizons for those tricky shots!

Okay, this one is for No.2.

I was out shooting with my lovely XM2 - zoom still playing up... ugghh .. . - a very wide angle BIG bendy type shot of lifting cranes HIGH up over the new Wembley Stadium. Lots of BIG Blues skies, lotsa metalwork lotsa of options for distort. Before people started to criticise my horizon I found a "hanging" wire from one of the cranes "jibs", like a bricklayers Bob-line - that's gotta be vertical - placed this in dead centre and "framing" levels - used my 16:9 guidelines; checked my levels on my tripod; all works fine. Now when I panned away from "True Bob" anybody that wants to pick issue with my settings . . the cranes looking all over the place .. . looks kinda cool too .. . I can "show" them "True Bob" - HAH! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it . . . Yes I know the straight edges of buidings and rooms do it .. but what does a Guy do when out in the wild blue yonder . . .and all he's got is a . . . wel . .. 200 foot crane jib? I ask yah? What can a guy do?

.. just thought I'd pass this onto my chums here .. . psstttt .. . don't let the Sony folks know .. . they've got bigger CCDs than us . .they can see in the dark . .they've got metal bodies and BIG switches .. we gotta keep our edge - yeah?

Mum's the word - yeah?

Grazie
