Odd zooming experience

I was outside the other night, watching the clouds flying past the full moon. SO I got my GL1 out, set it on the tripod, and set it manually . The odd part is, the image seemed to be zooming in and out by itself. I had the stabliser off.

Is this just an illusion, or is it a problem?

On a different note, I also couldn't get Canopus or Premiere to detect the camera using 1394 and the Canopus B/O box.

Both focus and exposure were set to manual, Keith?

K. Forman September 28th, 2004 10:04 AM

Hey Ken- I had the cam set on M, which is fully manual, right?

Ken Tanaka September 28th, 2004 10:22 AM

That establishes manual exposure control. It's been a while since I've used the GL1, but I believe that manual focus control is set with a switch on the left side of the lens barrel, as it is on the GL2. Check me on this.

Correct, as usual Ken. It must have been in auto focus, but would that cause the funky zooming?

Mike Cavanaugh September 28th, 2004 10:38 AM

Was it really zooming or just hunting for a focus point in the vastness of the night sky?

K. Forman September 28th, 2004 10:45 AM

I'm not sure, Mike, but it was just like rocking the zoom back and forth.

It sure would, particularly when trying to shoot the sky. Auto focus relies mainly on contrast.
