Resolution Issue
 

Hello to all,

I am new to this forum and I have to say that this is a great place and alway's answers my questions.

The other day I shot some footage of the American flag close up (the stars and stripes filled the frame). I shot this in frame mode and interlaced mode from the same position but at different times of day. The frame version pixelates on the borders of the stripes as where the interlaced mode did not. I have heard many discussions on this forum and tested myself and found that claims of degraded picture quality in frame mode have been confirmed. This is not to ditch frame mode because it works well in many situations.

How did you play back to view the footage? Maybe you noticed "stair-stepping?"

Hmmm. This summer I took several shots of a waving American flag for stock use that sound nearly identical to yours, also with frame mode on my GL-2. Everything cam out just fine. Indeed, I slowed-down one of the clips to 65% speed with Final Cut Pro and it came out very nicely.

Do you recall any of the camera data (i.e. shutter speed, F-stop) that you used? Also, indeed as Frank wondered, how are you playing back the footage? Perhaps we can piece this puzzle together.

I was at about F-3.0 with ND on. Shutter speed was 1/210, This to me is not a mystery, it just proved to me a point that some previous posts were claiming. It is OK because in the frame mode, the blue of the flag really showed the grainyness of film that people like myself have been searching for. I can deal with this, Interlaced is much cleaner but sometimes it loses the richness the frame mode gives you. I am starting to see where to use frame mode and when not to.

Frame mode shouldn't do that, as far as I know. Maybe you mean the movement of the flag was choppy? How did you view the footage?

With progessive scan on my DVL9500s and frame mode with my MX, footage like that looks sharper/cleaner (by a bit), but a tad choppy when I play back via AV or S-video out.
