Filter

I have the Canon wide angle adapter for my GL 1. Can I screw in a filter like a ND filter into the camera and then the wide angle into the filter without any vignetting, image loss or camera damage?

Marco Leavitt April 1st, 2005 08:26 PM

That's been debated in here quite a bit. I've never gotten any vignetting, but some people say there could be focusing problems. I've never noticed any, but I haven't spent a lot of time looking for it.

The best thing about video is you can try it and see Mike. Fit the filter between wideangle converter and zoom, zoom to full wide, shoot at small apertures (shoot into the sky with no ND in place) and wobble the camera about with the image stabiliser turned on. View the results on your pc monitor (to see the full film frame) What do you see?

Yep

Right - I realize that... but what about mechanical failure or problems - ie damage to the camera or lens - dont want to try and see that... Also - why waste the time to try it extensively if the answer is a simple no - hence the question...

There's no chance of mechanical damage. We can't tell you if the combo will vignette the image because we don't know how thick your ND filter is or how powerful your wide-angle converter is or what your minimum focal length is or where the end-stops are reached on the VAP OIS.

Why don't we know these things? Because they're all subject to design, manufacture and build tolerances, and two cameras with the same filter and same w/angle converter will act differently. You really have to try it and see, but if you haven't bought a ND yet, go for the thinnest one you can find.
