About to buy the VX2k but then .... Is GL-2 good alt.

Okay,
About to plunk down some dough for the VX2K when the very reputible dealer said this camera is about to be discontinued and they are awaiting the new model to arrive in the next month or two. First, has anyone else heard or read anything about this?
Second, I was set to go with the Sony mainly because of the 1/3" chips (better low-light/dof performance). It's seems to me the GL-2 is a good alternative despite the smaller chip size. Is this true?
I applogize for bringing up the old 2k/GL comparison topic - but thought the supposed discontinuance of the 2k merited discussion. Thanks for your help.

I would either get the GL 2 if I had an immediate need for a camera or wait for the Sony replacement if your a big Sony fan. If the new Sony isn't out in a week or two I wouldn't expect it till late winter, early spring. Manufactures usually use the holidays to reduce stock on soon to be discontinued models. If you really like the VX2000 Sony may end up putting rebates on it if sales are slow.

Shit, that was kept a secret. I had heard nothing about a new Sony camera emerging at all. DAMN, I could have gone through the whole camera discussino again with that camera! ;)

I understand from financial sources that video camera sales of units listing over $1000 have been quite slow in the U.S. for at least the past quarter. Cross-referencing with consumer credit loads suggests that people, at least in the U.S., are just up to their scalps in debt. Holiday forecasts are even more grim. Look for "sales" or package deals starting next month.

If Sony announced anything this late in the year, it would probably happen around COMDEX or DV Expo time (product launches always revolve around tradeshows). I haven't heard a word about it, but I wouldn't be surprised, either.
