GL2 Makes A Great WebCam :)

It's probably enough to make most of you cringe, but someone I was talking to on Messenger the other day asked me if I had a webcam. Since I already had the GL2 connected to my iBook, I decided to give it a try. It worked instantly, and people who have viewed it say the video is excellent :)

BTW, I have actually used it to shoot some footage and stills :)

Scott Silverman January 23rd, 2003 04:57 PM

Were you using it through the Firewire port or through USB?

Kirk Messner January 23rd, 2003 05:31 PM

Scott, I was using firewire.

Scott Silverman January 23rd, 2003 08:18 PM

Really? Huh, I tried doing that and my computer failed to recognize the camera. I wanted to use it as a web cam but MSN messenger wouldn't see it. Thats interesting...I wonder how you got it to work? Thanks!

DV Messenger

Canon users in the States can use Canon's "DV Messenger"
It uses your GL2, through firewire, as a webcam.
What I find strange is that it's only allowed for GL2 users in the US to download this tool.

Are there European or other people using DV Messenger?
I'd love to use it!!

Mate I'm in Japan and use it with my XL1. I just downloaded the software from the US site. Just give them a US post code and place.

DV Messenger

Thanks for the tip.

I've dowloaded DV Messenger but when I execute it, it says: "DV NETWORK SOLUTION DISK.msi" CRC ERROR.

I then click OK and get the message "could not install"

I'm running Windows XP with Messenger 4.7 installed ....

Rob Lohman January 24th, 2003 11:08 AM

I think your download is bad. Try downloading it again. A CRC
error is a self-check error. When installing the installer checks
the whole package to make sure everything is there and correct
(this is what a CRC -> Cyclic Redundency Check does). If it fails
it usually indicates one of the following 4 things:

1. your download went wrong
2. you have (a) virus(ses)
3. your operating system is unstable
4. you have a faulty harddrive

Or they put up a fault download, but that is probably quite
unlikely (could happen ofcourse).

Kirk? How did you get it to work on a mac?

As the canon software only works with Windows XP, I was wondering how Kirk got this to work on a mac? What software were you using, configuration etc.

Thanks for any info,

Bryan

Dear Rob

Thanks for your reply.

1. Tried downloading a few times
2. I have no virusses (running an up to date antivirus program)
3. Do you know a *stable* Microsoft package ;-)
4. HD seems OK

But thanks anyway, I'll try it again later!

Berst regards!
Bart

Software DV webcam

check out WebcamDV by Orange Micro, haven't tried it but am about to. Will post my results.

Ryan Krga September 6th, 2003 06:28 PM

Does anyone know where I can download the drivers to make it work with Yahoo? I just need it to be reconized in my computer. Will I have to download DvMessenger even though I already have a webcam application?
