Which camera to buy GL2 or DVX100B
 

Well I am ready to go for the camera upgrade FINALLY !
Which one do I buy ?
The GL2 ? Or the DVX100B. I know the specs and the 24p capabilities of the DVX. But other than that is it a better camera image wise ?

If you had to buy one and the price difference isnt an issue..Which would it be ?

If you know the specs then you know the DVX100B is a more professional camera. Granted, the affordable GL2 has a nice bright image and the on-board mic is surprisingly crisp. But the DVX has bigger CCDs (the difference in image is noticeable) with a better, wider lens, XLR inputs and phantom power, and all the progressive-frame capability. And a much better eye-viewfinder.

It depends on your use, though- if you do only wedding videos and nice home movies, the GL2 is probably perfect. But if you do any industrial applications the DVX might serve you better.

Screw the Gl2, buy the DVX100 hands down, no questions asked. If you can't afford it buy a DVC30, it is like a miny DVX and better than the Gl2 in all respects other than the 16x zoom.

Thanks guys, I am waiting for the shop to get DVX100B in. They have agreed to let me do a bit of side by side testing b4 I decide which one to buy..

But ultimately it will probably be the DVX100..

If anything don't even compare the gl2 to the DVX.

Try comparing the DVC30 to the DVX, you may be suprised. The DVC30 is beter than the GL2, yet not quite a DVX because it has 1/4 inch CCD's

The DVX does 24p, and 24p is my daddy.

Does it matter? It will win over the gl2 in every circumstance (IMO).

The only thing, and the only thing the the gl2 has over the DVX is the 20x zoom.

However it significantly lacks the wide angle, which is probably more desired, and used than the 20x.

For example, how many Gl2 shooters do you know or see that keep the wd58 wide angle lens on at all times after they first see how more relevant a wide is than a long lens. In my experience most people keep it on.

Sure a long lens has advantages in some things, but less things than a wide.


Really, why do you think that the Gl2 is better? I am very curious.


IMO the DVX slaughters the Gl2, and still beets the XL1's and XL2. Even the DVC30 beats the GL2 and XL1's, knipping on the heels of the XL2 in 60i.

Sorry to rag on Canon ( I used to like the Gl2 when I had one).

Later I refused to buy from Canon again from horrible service, and screwing up my Gl2 in the Factory (camcorder out of service for almost three months, YES three months, and no loaner camcorder for compensation), but when the XHA1 was announced, it was my dream cam on paper and hasn't let me down.

It romps on the DVX and XL2 and the Gl2 is so old school in comparison.

Yet, I am still really curious why the Gl2 is better than the DVX in your eyes.

Uh....my "hehe...not really, no" comment was in response to his "Does it matter what you're shooting?" question. As in, no, it doesn't matter...the DVX100 will win.

Thanks guys, whatever camera I decide to buy will be used mostly for filming action motorcycle stunts as well as family type stuff and the occasional corporate event.

Yeah, emotions aside :) if the cash is not a problem go with the DVX. It can shoot (better) 60i just like the Canon along with 30p and 24p. But remember, that the camera is only the first part. You will want good audio and a good set of sticks to go along with it. So if the choice is a DVX with nothing or a GL2 with some accessories, go with the gl2.
