a shoe question

Can i use an accessory (external mic for example) intended for a cold shoe mount to the hot shoe mount on my optura 60? Will any accessory intended for a cold shoe short circuit the connections on my hot shoe? I've had my Optura 60 for more than 2 months now but have yet to buy any accessory coz im busy and have no time trying out attaching anything yet on my videocam. Im just curious as to what bad thing might happen if i use an accessory intended for a cold shoe to a hot shoe port.

Supposedly you can't use any type of metal accessory in the hotshoe mount of the Optura 60 or it will indeed short circuit the camera. Don't know if this is true, or myth, but it is the conventional wisdom.

what are the common material that are being used on a cold shoe accessory base? You know the ones you attach on a shoe mount. is it metal or plastic?
