im sure i heard the PAL version doesnt have 24p

but does the NTSC, US and JApanese versions have it

and does the pal version actually not have it?

The PAL version does not have 24p. The NTSC version does.

I have the HV20 NTSC (America) and it has 24p.

Looking on the Canon Europe website, it seems the European/PAL version of the HV20 has 25p, but not 24p:

The description says 25p (PAL) version is cinema style, like movies are shot.

Since the custom is to speed up 24p movies and play them at 25p in Europe, I am quite sure a PAL European camera would not have 24p.

To get all shooting modes in the same camera, you may have to go to an XH-A1 (for example) with the special upgrade.

I have never heard about a similar upgrade (adding the PAL modes to an NTSC camera or vice-versa) for the HV20, only for the XH-A1/G1.

For comparison, here is the Canon USA HV20 18 page product PDF. In this it says the HV20 has 24p, with no mention of 25p:

As a minor point of interest, in some rare circumstances, there have been Japanese versions of prosumer cameras that had all shooting modes, whereas in the U.S. and Europe, two versions were sold with standards specific features, i.e. PAL or NTSC.

However, judging from the last Japanese verson Canon prosumer camera I tried to use, it would be necessary to read Japanese camera language to use one of these rare cameras.

Nearly all pro cameras come out of the box in English, and if not then they are easily switchable into English.

It's true, when I bought my HD100j I didn't realize that NTSC (from America) couldn't shoot PAL frame rates in SD, and vice versa for PAL. But my camera which I bought in Tokyo could do just that.

David you are lucky you be able to use 25p. It is so much easier to deal with from the HV20 then what 24p is. 25p can be edited right out of the camera with no pulldown that needs to be removed.

In fact very few PAL cameras have 24p because they really done need it. It is only us messed up NTSC users that need 24p the way we have it.

25p is easilly converted to 24p if you are transferring to film.

Plus there's no visual difference between 24p and 25p, so you're not missing out on anything anyway.

The special upgrade for the XH-A1/G1 adds PAL to an NTSC camera or NTSC to a PAL camera.

The upgrade costs about $500. As I said above, this is for the XH-A1/G1, not the HV20.
