Canon HG21 and Final Cut Pro

Hi folks. Considering purchasing the Canon HG21, would cut with FCP 6.x. But I'm hearing here and there that the connivence of recording onto the built in HD and cards is offset by the tremendous time it take the files to to render or uncompress when copied onto the computer and then imported to FCP. This has to do with the video file type, .mts, correct? If I were to shoot in standard def using the HG21 and have to then copy the files onto my computer, render and possibly re-render files when importing to FCP, would this, compared to MiniDV, make capturing QT movies (like I've done for years), seem like an incredibly much longer process by contrast?
