HFS100 Test Shooting

I just got this camera a few days ago. It's awesome!

Here are 2 clips that I shot.

Thanks for sharing, Aaron! My HF100 and a bunch of accessories are on a UPS truck right now, I'm so excited...

Can you tell me what is the speed of your memory card? I'm stuck in between choosing S10 and S100, because I read that class 4 SD card could cause drop-outs (potentially) and class 6 cards don't come in 32gb variety.

I have HF100's and am experiencing no dropouts on class 4 cards. However you might consider getting 2 class 6 16GB cards. That way you don't have all your "eggs in one basket" with 32GB cards only.

I shoot at 1920x1080 17Mbps and a 4GB card gives me just over half an hour, 8GB cards give me just a tad over an hour and those 2 sizes fit my way of working, so I don't mind having to stop and change media cards.

I will shoot only in 24mbs mode and if I'd buy two 16gb class 6 cards it would cost more than just choosing HF S10 from the beginning...

What I'd really like to know is, how much better is the picture quality at 1920 x 1080 of the HFS10 over the HF10 - and be really honest :-)

Bruce Foreman April 26th, 2009 04:58 PM

The main difference I saw between 24Mbps with the HF11 and 17Mbps with the HF10/HF100 was the way detail held up better with motion and during pans. There was a noticeable improvement with the 24Mbps and the HF11.

Video samples I've seen from the HF S100 and the HF S10 seem to be even a tad crisper, as I understand it, there is a new color chip in the newer cameras.

Looks like I'm going to be using the HF100's for a while so I'm not in a position of having purchased one of the new cams and have to "brag" on it.

Thanks Bruce - that's what I wanted to hear!

Canon Vixia HF S100 24p MultiRig Pro Raynox HD-6600

Thanks Aaron for posting. Your video was one of a few that sold me on the camera.

I finished some testing as well with a Raynox HD-6600 wide adapter and stabilizing using a DVtec MultiRig Pro:

I have a question for you. How are you dealing with 24f. Did you actually get it to native 24p? I was able to using JES deinterlacer to get rid of the duplicate frames.

Apple - Downloads - Video - JES Deinterlacer

However, I just discovered that throwing the footage into a 23.98fps timeline in FCP just works. No jutteriness at all. I'm not sure how it knows what to do, but it looks like it simply does. So I think I can now skip the pulldown process unless I see any issues.

Can't wait to see what a finished product from you Aaron. Can you give us the details of your shoot. What mode, what FCP settings, etc.
