Canon HF S10 - which files to keep
 

I'm trying to learn which files I need to keep when transfering to my hard drives. It appears the MTS files are the only files I need and the others can be deleted. Is there a reason for me to keep the CPI files?

Just keep the MTS files.

If you got the Pixela software with the HF S10 you might look at this process:

I have HF100's. I pull the SDHC card out of the cam (Yours should allow you to copy your "take" from the internal memory over to SDHC cards) and plug it into an SDHC card reader connected to a USB port on my computer.

Copy the .MTS files only over to a "project folder" on the computer's hard drive and using the Pixela viewer review the clips and rename them to something that will mean something to me in the editing process. The camera assigns numeric filenames and 0423.MTS means nothing to me while CavalryPatrol01.MTS and CavalryDrills07.MTS on an old Texas fort project gives me a clue.

While many folks put down the Pixela software (the editing program is a SLUG) the viewer lets me rename files "on the fly" even while still watching one.

After that I copy the renamed files to a copy of the same project folder onto 2 external USB 500GB drives so the footage is "safe". Once this is CONFIRMED, I return the SDHC card to the camera and there do a complete initialization.

When editing I use the renamed files in the C: drive project folder.

It sounds complicated but renaming systematically saves much time and confusion in the editing process and this workflow has paid off for me on several projects.
