HF S100 Audio

Hey folks.. I'm new here, and new to video. Had a kid recently, so of course I had to go out and buy a videocam, settled on the HF S100. So far I like it, though I have a LOT to learn about shooting/editing video (have been an avid photographer for several years). Right now I'm using the dummy mode, but hope to start playing with the more manual features soon.

My biggest issue at the moment is sound. I'm noticing that the camera-person is always loud when speaking, but anyone in front of the camera is barely audible. I assume the best case fix for this is an external mic? I'm on a budget after buying this cam and just ordering a Raynox HD 6600. Should I mess with the gain?

Bear with me.. I'll do my best searching through the forums before asking.. :)

Thanks,
Adam

I love this camera, but it took awhile to get the audio right. The sound out of the box didn't work for me. The canon has a non-standard hotshoe, so you can either get the Canon shotgun mic or an adapter. I got the Hague adapter and it is great.

I mounted a Rode Videomic and tried working with the settings. Better but there was a persistent hum.

I finally ended up with a JuicedLink and and a couple of different mics. The JuicedLink is awesome, I turn the Canon way down and use the JuicedLink pre-amp. Night and day, plus it will let you use XLR mics.
