Why do I see color bandings?

I was recording a short clip of a TV program, by just holding the camcorder in front of the TV. Upon playback, I see color bandings on the camcorder's LCD screen. I haven't transferred the footage to my computer yet, so I'm not sure if the color bandings are only seen on the camcorder's screen, or was it actually recorded and will also be seen on my computer monitor. What causes the bandings? What can be done to prevent them? Thanks!

Camcorder: Canon HFS100
TV: Mitsubishi WD-73738 DLP

If you can post a screen grab of the image it will be easier to figure out.

With the limited information we have it could be any number of things such as artifacts of the DLP projection system in the TV or moire.

Assuming it was a CRT tv and not an LCD.

Probably interaction of the raster scan and the shutter in your camera being engaged.

Darker bands that "roll"?

EDIT: just re-read the original post. DLP. My bad. Need more coffee.

Hold on, I think the DLP is a factor here. I just read about the way single-chip, color DLPs work, and it could actually make sense for it to be causing color banding. A single-chip DLP projects 3 passes for frame: one R, one G, and one B. If his camera is de-synced from the DLP, then he could be catching only fractions of each pass.

My suggestion: Use shutter-priority (Tv mode), and set the shutter speed to 1/30 or 1/60. See if things improve. If not, post a screen grab.
