HV 10 as a deck question?
 

I know most of you are using the new HV10 as a deck for your dv/hdv and Xl H1 tapes (and as a point-and-shoot camera), but my question is this; are true decks made differently than a camera such as the HV10? Will the HV10 last and not suffer any sped-up wear and tear damage from using it as a play-back deck?

First- It is my understanding that there are no decks (yet) that can even handle 24f & 30f. So we're kinda stuck there.
Second- Decks are very expensive and are made specifically for capture in a professional environment, so they are very much different than a cheap camera. But for those of us that are not capturing massive amounts of footage, making dupe tapes etc, a cheaper camera is the perfect solution with the added benefit of having another cam to use.
Third- Using it as a deck will definitely put wear on the camera, that is the whole reason why we'd spend the extra to pick up an HV 10 rather than use the A1-G1-H1 as a deck. But I've got a little ZR60 that I've used for all my XL capture, plus my daughter uses it as her camera and it is still working great.

Our church bought a Canon ZR back in 1999. It is used to record two (one hour) services every Sunday. While it has had some minor problems, the deck is still going strong. All DV decks are compatible, but the electronics must accomodate the data on the tape. HDV data is different from DV, but the mechanical decks are the same.
