My Raw Footage...care to experiment with it?
 

I need some Compression Education...desperately.

The HDV files are so huge, but the image quality is obviously worth it. My question is this:

How do I compress the files to a resonable size and keep the quality like the ones here at Apple HD?:

I really need some help in figuring out how to properly compress my footage. Is there a guide for it somewhere?

I have files after "compression" that are bigger in size than the original and this is after actually cutting some parts out! I don't get it.

I know I'm missing something. I'm using Vegas7 so hopefully you guys can educate me on this? Do I need to purchase a HQ encoder?

What is the best method for compressing these raw files? If someone could give me a step by step guideline I would appreciate it immensely!

I don't know what platform you are using (Mac or Windows)... I'm using a Mac with FinalCut Pro studio.

I encode my videos from FCP using "Apple Compressor". Format is h264, multipass encoding, motion compensated deinterlace, 1440x1080. All other settings are defaults. You have to figure out the best data rate you self, because this is a matter of taste. Try something between 4096 - 25000 kbits/sec. :)

Is the h264 codec limited to Mac's only?

I'm thinking of getting a Laptop for Video editing this summer and I might just get an Apple just for that. It seems like Apple has some really nice Hardware/software for just this sort of thing.

Nope. Quicktime Pro for Windows has it too. As does MainConcept's h.264 encoder. I'm sure there are others as well.

Hi Brad - are you only interested in H.264? Vegas can render straight to WM9 Advanced (VC-1) in 1080p. For some reason Vegas wont render directly to H.264 but if you render as Quicktime 7 motion jpegA for example you can load that mov into quitime 7 (pro version needed) and then export as h.264. If the quality slider is set to high you will end up with a file size not that much smaller than the original so I would go for just above medium for a 7-8Mbps encode

In my opinion there isnt much between h.264 and VC-1 although the latter perhaps looks better at lower bitrates.

I am happy to do you a sample of both using your clip if you would like and upload to Zudeo.

I have Quicktime pro, but the h264 codec doesn't show up as an option in Vegas so I guess like you said I have to import it into Quicktime after Vegas.

If you could do the samples and help me figure out how to do it...man...I would be so thrilled!

I had a quick play with the .mt2 file you posted and I wanted to let you know my results and method...

I used TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress which is very quick and easy to use. They also have some cool features like color correction (which I did to your file), file-size calculator, and a "preview encoded output" button so you don't have to wait to see your results. The only down side is it's a bit pricey and the trial is limited to 30min videos w/ watermark. It's worth a shot though... Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks, that looks very impressive. The original file was around 60 megs and you got it down to 23 megs and it still looks quite good!

I have converted the 60i m2t to 60p using interpolate fields in Vegas and rendered in wm9 advanced codec (VC-1) at 720p. I converted to 60p rather than the usual 30p to maintain more resolution in the panning - ie there is less judder and you can therefore focus more clearly on detail as it passes by - check out the design on the hangar.

I chose a high bitrate of 12.5mbs which gives a file size of 35mb. It is necessary to double the bitrate for 60fps so the same quality could be achived with a 17.5mb file (6.25mbs) file at 30p

I also graded the colour slightly using magic bullet (nothing too obvious).

PS 1080-60p is even better but my system isnt up to it!

I can imagine how nice 1080-60p must look, but my PC couldn't handle it either!
