wow - Chris , will this mean a reduction in Reds pricing ?? Just joking , obviously , but Canons' gone a destroyed my consumer fairness balance. You know the one that says buy Sonys' video cams but Canons' still cams. I can hardly wait for the early reports. Almost as big as the fx1 in perking my interest. thanks for the great news.

Hey, Chris, I think you got the HV10 and HV20 prices switched.

Seems that way at first glance, doesn't it Bill? But at the moment those prices are accurate... the HV20 will have an MSRP of only $1099, and Canon USA has not yet announced a corresponding price drop for the HV10, which still lists for $1299.

While the current MSRP discrepancy might seem strange, most of the authorized Canon dealers in the U.S. are in fact selling the HV10 for much less than full retail. For example at the MacWorld expo in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago, B&H was taking HV10 orders in their both for $899 with free shipping.

So I guess it all evens out in the end.

Hmmm. Does Canon have any mics that fit on the shoe besided the DM-50?

Nope -- the DM-50 is currently the only Canon Advanced Accessory Shoe microphone.

You'll find plenty of other mics that *fit* on the shoe, such as the Sennheiser MKE-300, but they won't *connect* through the shoe. Instead they'll plug into the 3.5mm stereo audio input minijack.

So there's a lot of mic versatility if you don't mind the cables... but there's only one Canon AAS mic.

I stand corrected...and amazed. It's going to be really difficult to resist it for this price. In addition to the obvious use as a deck, having an ittybittycam that does 24p to use when the XH A1 is inappropriate (like for camera-dangerous shots or guerrilla video where you need to look like a tourist), this is looking really nice.

It sort of takes me back to my old 16mm days when I'd lug around a CP16R but always had a Bolex for backup, for aerials, and for situations where I didn't want to take the expensive, bigger camera. The HV20 might become my Bolex soon.

Chris, thanx for the writeup. How manual can you go with the HV20? (focus, zoom, iris)

Also for doing interviews where a larger or more professional camera might be intimidating. Sometimes a small cam can help get a more natural interview. But yeah, the guerrilla factor is pretty interesting.

Thanks Chris. Not everything, but not bad for a little $1g HDV 24P camera. Not bad at all.
