Final Cut Pro 6 and reverse advanced pulldowns help
 

I'm having problems reverse telecine'ing HDV (PF24) 1080p footage in FCP 6. Sending the footage to After Effects or JES Deinterlacer works great, but FCP 6 has a reverse telecine tool that sends it to Compressor and round trips it automatically. It would be so much faster, except for the fact that it isn't working (i.e. very noticeable interlacing, clip still has field dominance set). It also has a tool called "remove advanced pulldown" but when I try it, an error comes up saying the footage isn't DVCPro. Also, if I capture via Firewire HDV > AIC, is there a way to remove the pulldown while I capture?
Anyone have any tips/tricks?

i bought fcs 2 today and am installing it right now... at which point i'll be running it through it's paces and i'll make sure to check out that aspect

ok, so i've been playing around with the with FCP cinema tools and compressor, and from what i can tell the cinema tools/FCP pulldown removal tools are virtually unchanged from the previous version. cinema tools still won't remove pulldown on mpeg files, and it doesn't have an automatic pulldown removal either.

however compressor will allow you to reverse telecine, and from the tests i've done i have had no problems with it finding/removing the cadence properly. it will also remove the pulldown from hdv source files, and output to any file (that i've tried thus far) included back to hdv, AIC, proRes, and h264. of note though, when it ouptuts the file as 100% source opening the files in quicktime, they will display as square pixels (4:3), but will open at the correct aspect in FCP

as far as workflow implications it looks like it will be similar to using JES, just using compressor to process all the footage after it's captured.

Apparently the "tool" inside FCP doesn't work, but if you send your footage to compressor, it will. ...and apparently it's a lot better at detecting cadence changes (although I haven't tried it yet). Although I gave up and used JES deinterlacer > AIC on this project, I think I'm going to try to use compressor from now on. It appears to be the cleanest way to go to prores codec.
