any XF100 shooters/Avid editors here?
 

Hi there,
I'm just wondering how nicely XF100 files import into Avid Media Composer.
I would imagine this camera and editing software would work nicely together (mxf all the way), but I know enough about file types and codecs and 'wrappers' to know that I don't really know very much at all.

Hi Malcolm

We have a few Avid suites here and they work just fine with the MXF files from the XF305. I'd imagine there would be no difference with material from XF100 cards. It's just Sony's MP2-based XDCAMHD codec in essence, so it's even natively supported by MC/Symph. You just need the relevant AMA plug-ins, load the volume from the card or a copy and the footage will appear in Avid. You can work from the card/copy or just review the footage this way and then consolidate to your media pool to copy it over. It works flawlessly here. You retain a great deal of metadata just like with XDCAM EX. Consolidated XF media will show up as Sony XDCAMHD 422 but it's exactly the same thing. There are detailed instructions on the Avid AMA pages or in the manual for MC5.0 upwards. It works a treat.

My other camera is a Sony EX-1, so the fact that the XF100 files end up as XDCAM files sounds like a good thing.
So that's one of my two worries about the XF100 out of the way.
My other worries are:
1. that the XF100 isn't very good at lower light levels (the Sony is good in these conditions, with its larger 1/2" sensor). I want to be able to intercut the footage I get with these two cameras, so this is a concern for me.
2. even in good light, how the XF100 would match colour-wise with my Sony.
Have you intercut footage from both cameras in your editing suites?
